A committal service for Mrs. Susan Bohannan will be held at a later date. She will be placed next to her husband, Ted Bohannan in Sigel, IL.
Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Jack Bohannan and his wife Carol of High Ridge, MO; nieces, Jane Holloway of St. Louis, MO, Bernice Boland of St. Louis, MO, and Betty Burkhart of Wisconsin; nephews, Ken and Dave Bohannan of St. Louis, MO; and a brother in law, Bill Bender of St. Louis, MO.
Mrs. Susan K. Bohannan was born May 8, 1920 to the late Jacob Krachtus and late Mary (Damn) Krachtus in Kubekhaza, Hungary, where she resided on a farm. She moved to America when she was twelve years of age. She married Ted Bohannan in 1940 and they resided in St. Louis, MO until moving to Clarksville, MO where they and their son, Jack, owned and operated a trailer park on the banks of the Mississippi River.
The three spent many a happy day hunting, and from this first-hand knowledge of waterfowl and wildlife came her desire to “record on canvas” some of these woodland and river dwellers. Susan was a country girl at heart and her love for the outdoors, especially waterfowl and the inhabitants of the forest.
Susan started her love for painting at a later age in life. Although she attended a few art classes her experience and confidence in painting was self taught.
Susan began entering art shows in Louisiana, Missouri. From there she branched out to neighboring towns from St. Charles to St. Louis. In 1980 her and Ted moved to Natchitoches, and Susan went right on with her painting and winning numerous awards in city and state wide exhibits. She was an active member of the Natchitoches Art Guild.
Painting wasn’t her only love; she enjoyed quilting, needlework, crocheting, and embroidery. She was a “country cook”, and it was mighty hard to beat her Hungarian goulash and stuffed cabbage.
Like many other active seniors, she learned that the secret of a long and happy life was found in doing what you love to do.
