Funeral service for Theophile N. Scott will be held 2 PM Thursday, June 21, 2007 in The Church of Immaculate Conception with Msgr. Carson LaCaze, Rev. Louis E. Skalar, and Rev. Stephen Scott Chemino officiating. Burial will be in Memory Lawn Cemetery under the direction of Blanchard St. Denis Funeral Home of Natchitoches, La. Visitation will be Wednesday, June 20, 2007 from 5 PM until 9 PM with a rosary at 6:30 PM in the chapel and visitation also on Thursday, June 21, 2007 from 8 AM until 1:30 PM in Blanchard St. Denis Funeral Home.
Mr. Scott, 87, of Shreveport, La., died Sunday, June 17, 2007, at Grace Home in Shreveport, La.
Mr. Scott was born May 23, 1920 and lived most of his life in Natchitoches. A graduate from St. Mary's Academy in 1938, Northwestern State University in l943, and received his masters degree from University of Arkansas. He was a corporal in US Marines and participated in the Phillipine Campaign. Coach Scott was a former coach, teacher, and director of student activities. He was the athletic coach at St. John's High School now Loyola from l947-49; later teaching at Woodlawn High School; worked as a Guidance Counsellor at St. Mary's
School. He retired from Louisiana and Texas Public School Systems. As a high school and College basketball official he worked over 3000 games. He served as Public Safety Commissioner for Natchitoches from l960-64.
His greatest accomplishments occurred during his football career, named to the St. Mary's School Hall of Fame, named Captain of the l942 NSU Championship Team, and was an All Conference Halfback and Safety in l941. At one time, he held several team records in football, one for over 38 years. Inducted into the NSU Graduates Club Hall of Fame in l984 and nominated recently as one of the top 100 football players at NSU. His son, Mark, recently published "Beat Tech" a book in honor of his dad and the l942 championship team at NSU.
Mr. Scott was past president of Natchitoches Genealogical and Historical Association and King of Krewe of Elders 2007 in Shreveport, La.
Preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Laura Sandel Scott; daughter, Susan Mondello; parents, Oscar Marks Scott and Emee Breda Scott; sisters, Marie Jones, Lily Landford, and Gertrude Solomon; brothers, Oscar Scott and Thomas Emile Scott.
Survived by his two daughters, Lydia Lee and husband Randy and Laura McClellan of Baton Rouge, La.; two sons, Mark Scott and wife Jacquie of Fairport, N.Y. and Joseph Scott of Shreveport, La.; grandchildren, John Lee, Jr. and wife Ginny, Mickey Mondello and wife Kristi, Valerie Zagacki and husband Ken, Dylan Longlois, Ryan Byrley and wife Rebecca, Blair Yarborough and husband Patrick; Christian, Mary Sue, and Nelson Scott; great-grandchildren, Lorelei Zahacki, Clayton Yarborough, Mikalya Mondello, and Andrew Zagacki; two sisters, Dora Jeansonne of Natchitoches, La. and Evelyn Parent of Miles City, Mt.
Pallbearers will be his five grandsons, Stephen Scott, Allison Scott, and Stuart Wright.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to NSU Athletic Association.
