Memorial service for Nina Lucile Magers will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, November 12, 2011 at St. Hilda of Whitby Anglican Catholic Church in Natchitoches, LA with Fr. Presley Hutchins officiating. Nina Magers, 88 years of age, passed away November 8, 2011. Nina was born September 8, 1923 to the late Andrew Marvin Moates and Daisy Bond Moates in Fort Worth , TX. Nina Magers was a remarkable woman who leaves behind a lifetime legacy of love and service to her community and her church. She moved to Natchitoches with her family in 1960 and taught art in the Natchitoches Parish public school system for twenty five years. She mentored many of these young people and remains in contact with a great number of her former students. She had a tremendous love of animals and was instrumental in the founding of the Natchitoches Humane Society over fifty years ago. Locally, she was known affectionately as the bird lady. Whenever people found injured birds or wild animals, they brought them to her to nurse back to health. Nina was a founding member of her church parish, Saint Hilda of Whitby Anglican Catholic Church and she served as the first Deaconess in the Diocese of New Orleans. Her life touched everyone she met; even being confined to a nursing home with a broken hip did not discourage her faith nor dim her love for others as she continued to share the love of Christ by starting a Bible study there. She has finished her God given course here but will be greatly missed by those she has left behind. She is survived by one daughter, Alice Ann Magers-Cole and husband Doug of Bremerton, WA; three sons, Theron E. Magers and wife Sandee of Boyce, LA, Andrew F. Magers and wife Krista of Franklin, LA, and Larry J. Magers and wife Kyong of Colorado Springs, CO; nine grandchildren; and five great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Magers, her parents, Andrew Marvin Moates and Daisy Aliena Bond Moates; two grandchildren; five brothers, John Flint Moates, Marvin Foy Moates, Dick Andrew Moates, J.B. Moates, Ned Moates; and one sister, Edna Earl Moates. The family has requested that donations be made to the Natchitoches Humane Society in lieu of flowers.
