Clayton was born in Vowell’s Mill, Louisiana to Juney Mae and Willie Honeycutt. He attended Bellwood Elementary and graduated from Provencal High School in 1956.
He worked in the South Texas oilfields with his uncle, Frank Honeycutt.
He married Jo Evelyn Dison on June 2, 1962. Three children were born to Clay and Jo: Cody Dell, Mary Lorraine, and Stacy Luke. Parents, Willie and Juney Mae and son, Stacy, predeceased Clay.
Clay was a career army soldier, serving two tours of duty in Vietnam, where he attained the rank of Sergeant First Class. After leaving the service, he worked as a journeyman carpenter with his brother-in-law, Harold Pitts, until his retirement.
Clay was a wonderful musician, playing guitar, harmonica, bass and piano. He was well-loved and respected among area musicians, and “The Upward Way” quartet, for whom he played bass. He helped teach grandson, Justin Wilson, to play lead guitar. Son, Cody, plays keyboard and harmonica; daughter, Lorri, and granddaughter, Mary Beth, sing; wife Jo sings and plays 12 string guitar. He often played with Floyd Ray Breedlove, Russ Danzy and Ronnie French. Son, Stacy, played guitar and drums.
Clay is survived by his wife, Jo; son, Cody and wife, Terri; daughter, Mary Lorraine Wilson; grandson, Justin Lane; granddaughter, Mary Beth and Brandon Blackmon; great grandson, Caden Lee; great granddaughter, Taylor; his sister, Kathy and Harold Pitts; niece, Kristi Lemoine; great niece, Kaitlyn Lemoine, and a host of relatives and friends.
Services are under the direction of Blanchard St. Denis Funeral Home. Service will held at the Provencal First Baptist Church on Thursday, April 12, 2012 at 2:00 P.M. with interment at Hickory Grove Cemetery in Vowell’s Mill. The family will receive friends at the Provencal First Baptist Church on Wednesday, April 11, 2012 from 5:00 P.M. to 9 P.M.
