Donald Eugene Hargis, 80, died at his home in Natchitoches on Wednesday, October 10th 2007. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, October 13th at 10 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Natchitoches with Rev. Donald Avery, Rev. James Poole, and Rev. Jackie King presiding. Visitation will be held at Blanchard-St. Denis Funeral Home on Friday evening from 5 until 8 p.m. Internment will be at Memory Lawn Cemetery in Natchitoches following the service. Don was born on September 21, 1927. He was preceded by his parents, Andrew J. and Velma Crow Hargis, his daughter, Jocelyn Hargis Causey and by his grandson, Chad Alan Hargis. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Margaret "Jo" Hargis; a son D. Rick Hargis and wife Susan of Natchitoches; daughters Cammie Hargis Goodall and husband Dick of Shreveport and Janice Hargis Chatelain and husband Kevin of Little Rock, AR. He is also survived by seven grandchildren: Ben Goodall of Dallas, TX, Jamie Surovik and husband Eric of Houston, TX, Andrew Causey and wife Mindie of Canyonville, OR, Lauren Chatelain of Alexandria, VA, Aimee Causey of Canyonville, OR, Callie Hargis of Natchitoches, and Catherine Chatelain of Little Rock, AR. His brother Dr. Ray O. Hargis and sister, Claire Hargis Greene, both of Natchitoches, also survive him, as well as a host of nieces and nephews. Don served as the Assessor of Natchitoches Parish for 12 years and retired from this office with 33 years of service. He attended college at Louisiana State University and received his degree from Northwestern State College and also served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Natchitoches for over 70 years. He was a devoted outdoorsman who loved hunting, fishing, and growing Irises. Don was also involved in various organizations and clubs including serving as President of the Natchitoches Lion’s Club, President of PTA at Weaver Elementary, longtime Treasurer of the Natchitoches Parish Fair, and Scout Master of Troop #60 in Natchitoches. He was also an advocate of the 4-H program in Natchitoches Parish, especially when supporting his children and grandchildren in showing jersey cows. He was also instrumental in the building and maintenance of the Chad Hargis Baseball Field at Natchitoches Central High School. Pallbearers will be Roger Greene, Andy Hargis, Randall Hargis, Gary Lynn Hargis, Ben Goodall, Andrew Causey, Lee Posey, and Mike Ciaccio. Honorary pallbearers will be Sam Hill, Sam Nelken, and Charles Johnson. Don was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He retained his sense of humor through his last days and brightened the lives of everyone who crossed his path. The family wishes to express their appreciation for the love and support shown to Don and his family throughout his illness, especially to Hospice of Natchitoches. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church building fund, the Louisiana 4-H Foundation, or the American Cancer Society.
