Mary "Lois" Vercher Swiatowy was born in the family home on June 1, 1927 at Bayou Derbonne, Montrose, Louisiana. She died on June 30, 2012 at the Natchitoches Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Natchitoches, where she had been a resident since 2006.
She was preceded in death by her parents Abram A. Vercher and Eveline Roy Vercher; paternal grandparents Emile Vercher and Ellen Airhart Vercher; maternal grandparents Mack Roy and Alice Everidge Roy and step-grandmother Daisy Vercher Roy; sisters, Lelia Vercher Bynog of Mansfield, Emma Vercher Thomasee of Natchitoches; brothers, Roy J. Vercher of Tioga, Abram Vercher, Jr. and L.G. Vercher, both of New Orleans, and her twin brother Morris Joseph Vercher of Many. Her husband Stanley Swiatowy, of New Orleans, also preceded her in death.
Survivors include two sisters, Mae Bell Vercher McRae of Mansfield and Evelyn Ruth Vercher of Slidell and many nieces and nephews.
She attended school in Cypress and graduated from Cypress High School, although the graduation ceremony had to be relocated to Natchitoches due to "high water" in Cypress.
Lois lived many years in New Orleans. In her later years she was a homemaker but had previously worked as a waitress at various locations in the city. She enjoyed visiting and spending time with family members, but there were times that she was content in being alone with one of her beloved dogs, listening to Cajun music, and enjoying the very simple things in life.
Her sudden departure leaves a void in the lives of her loved ones, but she will never be forgotten. Aunt Lois, may God grant you a well deserved and peaceful rest.
A service to honor her life will be 2 pm Saturday, July 7, 2012 at the chapel of Blanchard St. Denis Funeral Home with Deacon Joe Peltier serving as the celebrant. Interment will follow at Fern Park Cemetery in Natchitoches, LA. The family will receive friends the day of the service from 10 am until time of service.
