Mrs. Virginia Bruce Birdwell, 79, of Marthaville, passed away on Thursday, December 20, 2012, at Grace Home in Shreveport.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, December 23, at Jennings Chapel Congregational Methodist Church, near Marthaville, with the Rev. Brian Jennings and the Rev. Ed Fenton officiating. Burial will follow at McCaskill Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Saturday, December 22, at the church.
Virginia was born on February 2, 1933 in Pleasant Hill, Louisiana to Thomas and Anna Willard Bruce, she went to be with the Lord on December 20, 2012 after a lengthy illness.
Virginia was a lifelong and faithful member of Jennings Chapel where she accepted Christ at an early age. Working tirelessly as Sunday School teacher, Youth leader, and VBS Director, gave her much joy. In her pastime she enjoyed canning, reading, journaling, and writing poems. She was a homemaker who devoted her life to raising her family. Spending time with her grandchildren, who were her pride and joy, brought her much happiness.
Virginia was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years George Herman Birdwell, parents Thomas and Anna Willard Bruce; brothers, Virgil Bruce and Vonnie Bruce. Left to cherish her memory are her two sons, Steve Birdwell and wife Phyllis of Marthaville, and Stacy Birdwell and wife Tammy of Shreveport; five grandchildren, Emily Birdwell of Shreveport, Cody Birdwell of North Hollywood, California, Dana Birdwell and Lori Birdwell of Ruston and Mark Birdwell of Marthaville; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Cody Birdwell, Mark Birdwell, Butch Bruce, Mike Bruce, Ken Johnson, Scott Bruce, Chris Bruce, and Gavin Johnson.
The family wishes to extend special thanks to Dr. Steen Trawick, Dr. Rick Michael, and the staffs of Garden Park and Grace Home for their care and compassion during our mom’s illness.
