A service to honor the life of Mr. Roland W. Dobson will be at 2 pm Saturday, January 19, 2013 at Briarwood Baptist Church with Bro. Dick DeBusk, Bro. Trey Etheridge and Louie Bernard officiating. Interment will follow at Briarwood Baptist Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 pm until 9 pm on Friday, January 18, 2013 at Blanchard St. Denis and again on Saturday from 10 am until service time at the church.
Mr. Dobson passed away Thursday, January 17, 2013 in Shreveport, La. He was born January 18, 1930 in Chestnut, LA to E.P. Dobson, Sr. and Myrtle (King) Dobson. Mr. Dobson was a graduate of Readheimer High and was offered a contract to play baseball for the Detroit Tigers, but turned it down to begin his working career. He did many things but was most noteable for his work as a distributor for Texaco and the timber industry. He was a board member of the LA Forestry Association and a lifetime member. He also was appointed to the LA Superdome Commission and served two terms under Edwin Edwards. He was a devoted member and long time Deacon of Briarwood Baptist Church and taught Sunday school for over 40 years. His faith was very important and was honored to be a part of the Gideon’s. LSU sports were one of his biggest past times and he enjoyed watching with his family. He was a charter member of the LSU Tiger Athletic Foundation. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather and a loyal friend to many.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother E.P. Dobson, Jr.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of nearly 63 years, Margie Kelley Dobson; son, Ron Dobson and his wife Betty of Chestnut; grandchildren, Hope Kerby and her husband Melvin, Cory Dobson and his wife Amber, and Jon Dobson and his wife Laurie; great grandchildren, Taylor Dobson, Isabella Kerby, Payton Dobson, Kaylee Dobson, Sophie Dobson, Natalie Kerby and Conner Collins; nieces, Jan Baldwin and her husband Bill of Shreveport, Gail Varner and her husband Bobby of Arcadia, FL, Martha Griffith and her husband Jim of Parker, CO and Cynthia Dobson of Beaumont, TX; sister in law, Vennie Dobson of Sun City West, AZ.
Those honored to serve as pallbearers include, Jon Dobson, Cory Dobson, Payton Dobson, Taylor Dobson, Melvin Kerby and Don Kelley. Honorary pallbearers will be Lafe Frazier, Gerald Wilkins, Ronald Smith, Connor Collins and the Deacons of Briarwood Baptist Church.
