Louis Fair "Pop" Hyams, Jr.

A Memorial Service for Louis Fair Hyams, Jr. will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, April 16, 2014 at the Minor Basilica of Immaculate Conception with Fr. John Cunningham and Fr. John O’Brien officiating.   His obituary following was composed in his own hand. Born 18 July, 1930 and died on 10 April 2014 in Natchitoches, after 83 years of a good life. He often commented “Been there, done that, at least twice”. He was preceded in death by his father, Louis Fair Hyams, Sr. his Mother Adeline Katherine Breazeale Hyams, his sister Adeline “Cookie” Mims and almost all of his life long friends. He’s also known as “Pop” as was his father. He left his wife Arnetta, his sons Fair, Mark, Clark, Louis and Jon, and seven grand kids, Peter, Will, Ila Grace, Jackson, Jasper, Juliet and Pierce. He was a US Navy veteran in the Korean conflict. He had three careers, that of Federal Civil Service, the builder and Range Master of the Natchitoches Shooting Range, and that of a professional gunsmith. Hyams was a graduate of St. Mary’s Academy and Northwestern State University.  He was a life long Catholic and a member of the Immaculate Conception Basilica. He was a Patron Member of the National Rifle Association, an NRA Counselor/ Instructor, and a member of the American Legion. An avid outdoorsman, he loved hunting, shooting and fishing pursuing these interests in the US, Europe and Asia. As a highly qualified instructor, he taught thousands of youngsters about Louisiana Hunter Safety and gun safety /shooting techniques to many. While stationed in Germany he taught German hunting techniques to US soldiers. Hyams’ career took him and his family around the world twice with tours in Thailand and Germany. John Ropp, his lifelong friend, once said correctly “We lived in the best of times” After living a very full life he donated his body to the LSU Medical center.
