Johnie Everage died peacefully at M.D.Anderson Cancer Hospital in Houston, Texas on September 11, 2008. His wife of 67 years, Tessie Barr Everage, granddaughter, Marilise Berniger Marancik, and daughter, Frances Berniger were at his bedside.
Johnie was born on December 13, 1919 in Flora, Louisiana. He was preceded in death by his parents, his four brothers and one sister.
After serving in World War II in the U.S.Navy on the USS Waterman in the Asiatic Pacific Area, he and his wife moved to Galveston, Texas in 1946. Johnie worked for the International Longshoremen’s Association all of his adult life. He
Retired from the I.L.A. Local 307 as their Business Agent.
During his retirement years, Johnie became the family’s “favorite meteorologist”, who tracked hurricanes and was an expert watcher of cloud movement. Prior to his admission to the hospital on September 2 for a bleeding prostate tumor, he was convinced that Hurricane Ike was going towards Brownsville and would bypass Galveston. Hurricane Ike devastated Galveston on September 13, 2008.
Johnie liked to watch Meet the Press and had definite ideas about politics. One of his favorite things to do was “go to the polling place to vote”. He enjoyed watching Astros Baseball and The Grand Ole Opry. He was a good cook in the kitchen and at the barbeque grill. His wonderful sense of humor attracted people to him. His family will miss his Love and Wisdom.
Johnie requested cremation. A graveside service under the direction of Blanchard Funeral Home in Natchitoches, Louisiana will be held on Saturday, October 11, 2008 at 3 p.m.. The family would like remembrances of their beloved husband, father and grandfather to be made to the Gulf Coast Red Cross, Hurricane Ike Fund.
