Elizabeth Christophe Metoyer, 89, of Cane River, passed away peacefully on the morning of February 28, 2015 at the Natchitoches Community Care Center.
Elizabeth was born on August 28, 1925 in Bermuda, Louisiana to Joseph and Rosine Conant Christophe. She was born the youngest of ten siblings, brothers Andres, Ernest, Percy, and Justin “Horace”, and sisters Irma, Clotilde, Carrie Lee, Theresa, and Henrietta. She grew up in Natchitoches Parish in a devout Catholic household and was a life-long resident of Cane River.
On December 28, 1946, Lisa, as she was affectionately known to her family and friends, married the love of her life, Earl Metoyer, Sr. Their union was blessed with six children and they remained in holy matrimony for sixty-five years, until his death in 2008.
Elizabeth retired from the Natchitoches Parish Hospital with over 35 years of service. The majority of her time at the hospital was spent serving the patients of the Long Term Care Unit. She was a faithful and devoted member of the St. Augustine Catholic Church and the Confraternity of Christian Mothers. She served as treasurer for many years and proudly held membership as a Christian Mother for 65 years.
She was a greeter at mass and enjoyed participating in the Emmanuel Prayer Group, an organization devoted to prayer and evangelization.
One of her greatest joys was serving as a charter member of the St. Augustine Historical Society. She was proud to be a member of an organization that was dedicated to preserving the unique historic culture and traditions of the Cane River Colony of Creoles.
Her family and her Catholic faith were the two most significant things in her life. Prayer was a daily part of her life and household, as were many other Catholic customs and traditions that she shared with her family. Her favorite moments were the holidays when all of her family returned home to Cane River.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, all nine of her siblings, and son, Earl Metoyer Jr.
She is survived by James Metoyer and wife Mary Ann, Anita Evans and husband Ronnie, Kenneth Metoyer and wife Eydie, Debra Metoyer and husband Glenn, Gregory Metoyer and wife Antoinette; nine grandchildren Darius Metoyer and wife Monica, Duane Metoyer and wife Valerie, Melinda Coker and husband Brian, Kristen Metoyer, Michael Metoyer, Jared Evans, Monique Metoyer, Brooke Evans, and Glenn Metoyer, II; nine great-grandchildren, Darrien Metoyer, Darius Metoyer, II, Annalise Newton, Elena Metoyer, Mariah Metoyer, Brianna Coker, Nikolas Metoyer, Isabella Metoyer, and Tabytha Metoyer; a multitude of nieces and nephews; and a host of cousins and friends.
