Marie passed away on March 28, 2015.
Marie was born in Houma, Louisiana and raised here in Natchitoches. She was a true animal lover; from her babies, Zeus and Gidget, to the bald eagles she watched over at her Sibley Lake home.
She loved to go to flea market and garages sales, to the auction houses to find that perfect antique piece, and any other place where she might find that perfect treasure.
She loved her "children", no doubt about that. She loved them all; from the ones that rode the school bus she drove, to the grandchildren, to the many, many nieces and nephews she helped us raise. Marie never had children of her own, but she had many she claimed as her own.
Marie was taken from us way too early at the young age of 50 years. After a short treatment period at Cancer Treatment Centers of American in Tulsa, Oklahoma, she came home to spend her last few days with her loving family. She was a very compassionate person. She was very humble and never wanted to inconvenience anyone in any way. She was the perfect patient throughout her illness.
Even as she was leaving this world, her concerns were not for herself, they were for the ones she loved most. She found words of encouragement for us, like "This is not as bad as it seems" or "It’ll be okay, all I have to do is get my breathing right". Marie held on and fought a strong fight to stay with those she loved. She was prepared to go home, and ready to meet our Savior, yet she wanted to stay until she had the opportunity to say good bye to everyone, especially her grandchildren. She spent her last few days worshiping, singing, and praising God. One of the last memories we have of Marie is her holding her hands in the air saying "Hallelujah".
She was loved by many and will be missed terribly by all of us.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory her mother, Ruth Ates, of Natchitoches, Louisiana; her husband, David Roop, of Natchitoches, Louisiana; her step-daughters, Heather and her husband, T. J. Luoma of Shreveport, Louisiana and Ashley Roop of Shreveport, Louisiana; five grandchildren, Jamie Stewart, Allie Luoma, Maddie Luoma and Zoe’ Luoma, Logan Wood; her brothers and sisters, Janiece Richard of Natchitoches, Ricky Carpenter and his wife Kimberly of Natchitoches, Toni Pokoney and her husband Rick Pokoney of Jackson, Mississippi, Sarah "Jan" O’Bannon and her husband, Bruce O’Bannon of Provencal, Jack Davis, and his wife Stephanie Davis of Natchitoches, and Carolyn Miler, and her husband, Nathan Miller, of Natchitoches; and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews, all of whom she considered as "Ree Ree’s children" and of course many, many friends.
She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, David Lee Ates and Ruth O’Dell Ates; her father, Thomas Clayton Brown; and her nephew, Quadro Smith.
The family would like to offer a special thanks to the Cancer Treatment Center of America in Tulsa, Oklahoma. What a great family to be with. These folks treat every patient as if it were their Mother. Marie made several friends there and appreciated each and every person.
