Layton, 66 years of age, passed away Tuesday, July 21, 2015 at his residence in Natchitoches with his family by his side. He was born July 18, 1949 to Nigel and Elizabeth Oglesby Long in Winnfield, LA. Layton was a member of Oak Grove United Methodist Church. He loved his lord, his church, and his church family. His best times were spent with family. He followed his sons and grandsons in every sport they played. “Papa”, as he was fondly called by his grandchildren, was dearly loved by them. His witty sense of humor and gentle smile combined with his love for Glenda and his family made him a most amazing person.
He was a friend to all and never met a stranger. He leaves his family and friends with love and a gentle spirit. His presence will be missed, however, knowing he is with his Lord and Savior is comforting.
He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Glenda Mallett Long; sons, John Whittington of Natchitoches, Jason Whittington and his wife Jennifer of Shreveport and Justin Layton Long and his wife Sandy of Natchitoches; father in law, George Mallett; sister, Caroline Devereaux of White Stone, VA; brother, Robert Oglesby Long of Terrebonne, OR; grandchildren, Bryant Whittington, Ian Whittington, River Whittington, Julian Long, Hannah Whittington, Molly Anna Long, and Cesar Ochoa; niece, Catherine Devereaux Mc Nichols and her husband Bob of Fredericksburg, VA; and a nephew, Young Devereaux and his wife Emily of Fredericksburg, VA.
Those honored to serve as pallbearers include: Dr. Steve Heard, Sidney Walton, Delaine Grain, Chuck Barrios, Tommy Mathis, and Larry Hooper. Honorary pallbearers will be his grandsons, Bryant Mallett Whittington, Ian Hyle Whittington, River Hyle Whittington, and Julian Justin Long, as well as Dr. John Gilmer, Tom Culotta, and Billy Plunkett.
Donations in Layton’s name may be made to Oak Grove Methodist Church, 151 Yvonne Street, Natchitoches, LA 71457.
