Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord. Matthew 25:21 A memorial service for the Reverend Perry Flynt Webb, Jr. of Natchitoches, Louisiana will be held Saturday, May 21, 2016, at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church. A private graveside service, under the direction of Blanchard-St. Denis Funeral Home, will be held prior to the memorial service. Reverend Webb passed away on Saturday, May 14, 2016. He was born on February 9, 1925 in Malvern, Arkansas, to Perry F. Webb, Sr. and Thelma Fern Stahl Webb. He was 91 years of age at the time of his death. His early years were spent in Malvern and Pine Bluff, Arkansas and San Antonio, Texas, graduating high school from Texas Military Institute in San Antonio. He graduated from Baylor University (Waco, Texas) in 1946 and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary (Louisville, Kentucky) in 1949. Reverend Webb served as a Baptist minister for 74 years. He began his pastoral ministry as a Seminary student, serving a country church in East Central Illinois. He often joked that was where he learned to “persecute the Saints” with his preaching. Reverend Webb went on to pastor First Baptist Church, Poteet, Texas (1949-1952); First Baptist Church, Natchitoches, Louisiana (1952-1964); First Baptist Church, Albany, Georgia (1964-1975); and First Baptist Church, Baton Rouge, Louisiana (1975-1988). During his various pastorates he had the privilege to hold many positions of leadership. He served the Louisiana Baptist Executive Board as a Member, Secretary, Vice Chairman and President. He was President of the Louisiana Baptist Convention for two years. He loved the student activities at Northwestern State University, leading in the building of the first off-campus facilities of the Baptist Student Union, and serving as Chairman of the BSU committee of NSU and State Pastor Advisor of the Baptist Student Union. While living in Georgia he was a member of the Executive Board of the Georgia Baptist Convention and served the District Eight Convention as President and President of the Executive Board. He also held positions in the Southern Baptist Convention. He served for 15 years as a Trustee of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and as Chairman of that Board for his last two years. He served as a Trustee for Louisiana College and Tift College, and was a past member of the Board of Directors for the Baylor Alumni Association. In 2015 he was honored with the recognition as Pastor Emeritus to the First Baptist Church of Natchitoches, Louisiana. Reverend Webb was a frequent speaker for Southern Baptist Assemblies, evangelism conferences, Bible studies, and revival meetings. Even after his retirement he continued to serve many congregations as an Interim Pastor. He was happiest when he was preaching. Perry Webb married Virginia Louise Powell in October, 1949 in San Antonio, Texas. They were true partners in life and love, serving their church families as well as their own. All who knew Perry knew he loved to tell a good joke and pull pranks on family and friends. He never met a stranger and always made others feel like they had known him forever. He loved to play golf and 42 and was quite the competitor. Perry was an avid Baylor fan and one of his greatest joys in his later years was to see the Baylor football team and the women’s basketball team reach prominence on the national stage. Sic ‘em Bears! Reverend Webb was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Virginia Powell Webb; daughter, Deborah Webb Smith; son, Perry Flynt Webb, III and his wife, Kim; grandsons, Walker Smith, Phillip Smith and his wife, Amy, Jonathan and Tyler Webb; sister, Rebekah Webb Richards; as well as many nieces and nephews.
