Deacon Joseph C. Peltier, Sr.

A mass of Christian burial for Deacon Joseph C. Peltier will be held at 10 AM, Wednesday, February 8, 2OI7 at the Basilica of the lmmaculate Conception with The Most Rev. David P. Talley, Fr. Marc Noel, and Fr. John Cunningham officiating. Burial will be in Memory Lawn Cemetery under the direction of Blanchard St. Denis. The family requests that visitation is observed Tuesday, February 7th from 5:00 PM -7:00 PM. Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be held at 7:00 PM. Those honored to serve as Pallbearers are: Greg Thompson, Paul Soileau, Dillon Thompson, David Lalonde, Austin Barbo, Trevor Barbo, Sean LaCaze, Walt Pipkin and Kyle Scott. His son in laws, Rodney Jacobs, William Townsend, Keith Thompson, Mike Hinds, Greg Soileau and Ted LaLonde will serve as honorary pallbearers. Deacon Joe dedicated the better part of his life to serving others. He was ordained as the first permanent deacon for the Alexandria/Shreveport Diocese June 5, 1980. Over the next 37 years, he performed hundreds of baptisms, marriages and funeral services. His longest assignment was to Holy Cross Catholic Church and NSU Catholic Student Center. He and his wife Bobbie opened their hearts and home to the students providing meals, transportation or a place to stay during holiday breaks. Deacon also offered counseling and support for those dealing with suicidal thoughts, unexpected pregnancies and marriage preparation. He also served as Deacon at Immaculate Conception, St. Anthony’s, St. Augustine’s, as well as parish churches in Spanish Lake, Powhatan, Campti and Black Lake. He looked forward to providing Eucharistic services at Cane Gardens Apartments every Wednesday for 36 years. He also provided Chaplin services at Natchitoches Regional Medical Center and was a member of the hospital Volunteers. As a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus for 67 years, he served as Grand Knight and held office at the district and state level as well. He served our country as a Sergeant First Class during the Korean War from 1950-1953. Never one to meet a stranger, it didn’t matter if you knew him as Deacon, Mr. Joe, JC, Daddy, Paw Paw or “Smiley”, his smiles and hugs were free to everyone. He simply loved people and touched the lives of so many who will miss him deeply. He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Bobbie, his parents Felix and Anna Peltier, brothers Howard, Emmitt, Ernest and Edward; sisters Nettie Watts, Enola DeGruy, Pearl Gross, Ethel Adams and Lillian Pergue. Those who will cherish his memory are his children Cathy Jacobs and husband, Rodney; Joey Peltier; Susie Thompson and husband Keith; Judy Hinds and husband Mike, all of Natchitoches; Cindy Townsend and husband, William of Shreveport; Mary Soileau and husband, Greg of Katy, Texas, and Teresa Lalonde and husband, Ted of Baton Rouge. Also, three sisters: Florence Peltier, Madelyn Thibodaux and Anna Mae Mixon of Ponchatoula; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the American Lung Association, St. Jude’s, or a charity of your choice. The family asks that you join them following the burial at the Knights of Columbus Hall at 1105 E. Fifth St. for food and fellowship.
