Sophia Chrysafides Scruggs

Mrs. Sophia Scruggs, age 93, of Natchitoches, Louisiana, passed away on September 12, 2017. Mrs. Scruggs was born in Alexandria, Louisiana, on March 18, 1924. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph J. Scruggs, her parents, Michael and Zaire Drouin Chrysafides, her brother Steven Chrysafides, and her sister Catherine C. DeKeyser. Mrs. Scruggs is survived by her two daughters, Kathryn Smith and husband William, of Natchitoches, and Constance Phebus and husband Raymond, of New Orleans, and her son, Samuel H. Scruggs and wife Connie, of Natchitoches. She was the proud grandmother of Christy Phebus Bergman and husband Jeff, Katy Phebus Bassett and husband Scott, and Matthew Scruggs Smith and wife Dreda, and Thomas and Mary Anna Scruggs. Very special to Mrs. Scruggs were her three precious great-grandchildren, Raymond and Penelope Bergman, and Joseph Bassett. Funeral services for Mrs. Scruggs will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, September 16, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Cloutierville, with Father Christian Ogbonna, officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery under the direction of Blanchard-St. Denis Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 12 noon until service time Saturday at the church. The family wishes to thank Dr. Michelle Mayeux, the staff at the Courtyard of Natchitoches and Hospice of Natchitoches for their loving and compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Natchitoches Foundation.
