Margaret MacKenzie

January 2, 1920 — April 9, 2010

Margaret Martin MacKenzie was born January 2, 1920 in Greeneville, TN, the oldest daughter of Rev. and Mrs. John Martin. She graduated from Bristol Tennessee High School in 1937 and attended Montreat Junior College for Women in 1939 and then graduated with cum laude honors from King College, Bristol, TN in 1941. She then attended the University of Virginia Hospital School of Nursing in Charlottesville, VA, graduating as a RN in September 1944. She attended the New York University School of Education 1945-46 and received her Masters Degree in Public Health Nursing in June, 1950. She worked as a nurse in the Visiting Nurse Service of New York in 1944 and 1945. From 1946 – 1948 she was a staff nurse for the Louisville and Jefferson, KY Health Department and served as a staff nurse for the Visiting Nurse Associaition in New Rochelle, NY from September 1948 to August 1950. After her marriage, she was School Nurse at Polytechnical Institute of Puerto Rico, San German, PR and subsequently staff nurse at the Veterans Hospital at Oteen, NC. After moving to Natchitoches in 1955, she worked as a nurse at Professional Home Health Service of Natchitoches from 1972 to 1982, and the last nine years as Director of the agency. She was preceded in death by her parents, John Martin and Edna Woods Martin and her brother Dr. Samuel Martin of Corydon, IN. She is survived by her husband, Donald N. MacKenzie of Natchitoches; sister, Ellen Jane Martindale of Spring Hill, FL; children, Lorna Ellen Davis of Goodman, MO and Andrew David MacKenzie of Kingwood, TX; grandchildren, James N. Davis, IV of Tacoma, WA and Captain MacKenzie H. Davis of Ft. Knox, KY; one great grandchild, Lorna Eileen Davis of Tacoma, WA. She was a resident of Heritage Manor of Natchitoches from July 2007. A long-time member of the First Presbyterian Church of Natchitoches, active in the Clothing Bank and Food Bank programs and was instrumental in forming a chapter of Threads of Love at the church which provided sewing and knitting as its outreach work. The family wishes to gratefully acknowledge the care provided by Natchitoches Regional Medical Center, especially the staff of the ICU and Heritage Manor (now Community Care Services of Natchitoches) Nursing Home, and especially Dr. Kathleen Kautz and the staff of nurses and aides. A Memorial Service will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 15, 2010 at the First Presbyterian Church, 114 Bienville St., Natchitoches. After the service, friends are invited to visit family members in the church fellowship hall. Memorials in Mrs. Mackenzie’s name may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Natchitoches and/or the Northwestern State University School of Nursing.
