Ben Neil Mayeaux was born in Natchitoches on September 19, 1938. He passed away peacefully in his home on Sunday, October 20, 2019 surrounded by his loving family. A graduate of Natchitoches High School and lifetime member of the First United Methodist Church, he spent his life in service to his country, community and family. Upon an honorable discharge from the United States Navy, he returned to Natchitoches becoming active in civic affairs including the Jaycees, where he was named statewide outstanding President, and later served as President of the Kiwanis Club. He was President of the Natchitoches Central High School Athletic Booster Club and served 12 years on the Boy Scouts of America Advisory Board. He also served as the Chairman of the Board of Waterworks District No. 1 and was Director of Community Affairs for the City of Natchitoches until his retirement on December 31, 1998. In recognition of his service he was initiated as an honorary member of the Northwestern State University Theta Mu Chapter of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity on October 23, 2009. Ben married Thurlow “Sissie” Janice Miller on September 14, 1956. He spent his leisure time teaching their two sons, Ben and Clay, to hunt and fish, following the boys’ sporting and scouting events, and enjoying outdoor life at the family’s fishing camp he built on Wilma’s slough on Black Lake. He was a role model not only to his sons, but also for their scout troop members, teammates, fraternity brothers and friends. Ben is survived by his loving wife of sixty-three years, Sissie, and by his sons and their wives Ben and Peggy of Lafayette, and Clay and Jana of Natchitoches, his grand-daughter, Ashley Nicole Bailey, and three great-grandchildren, Madison, Mason and Morgan. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Benjamin Lucius Mayeaux and Edwina Smith Mayeaux, and his sister, Dianne Mayeaux Christopher. A special thanks is extended by our family to Dr. Otis Barnum and staff and Marie McDaniel of Hospice of Natchitoches. Visitation will be held at 10:00 a.m., October 24, 2019. at the Blanchard St. Denis funeral home with services at 11:00. Following the service, the family will receive friends at the home of Clay and Jana Mayeaux, 1980 Williams Avenue.
