Born in Delhi, Louisiana, and a native of Monroe he was the third of four boys born to Coach Howard Devone Payne, Sr. and Dr. Delores Beck Payne. The family moved to Natchitoches during Joe Beck’s early high school years where he graduated from Natchitoches High School in 1970. A gifted athlete, Joe Beck was an integral member of the Natchitoches High Red Devils football team, making First Team All-State, and winning the 1969 state championship.
He went on to attend Northwestern State University to play football for the Demons. He graduated from Northwestern State with a Bachelor’s Degree.
Joe Beck began his career in farming before transitioning into the insurance industry where he spent more than two decades as an award-winning agent for State Farm.
Joe Beck always looked forward to catching up with his former teammates at the annual Red Devil State Championship team reunion. He also made life-long friendships during the years he spent playing on McCrory’s softball team. In the last twenty years of Joe Beck’s life he spent time living in Dallas, TX and Kansas before returning to Louisiana. He loved spending time outdoors with his dogs and hunting. However, Joe Beck loved nothing more than spending time with his family, particularly his grandchildren.
