John Wade Riley, born on January 5, 1942, in Clarendon, Texas, passed away peacefully on January 24, 2025, in Zwolle, Louisiana. A devoted family man and a steadfast friend, John led a life marked by service, kindness, and an unwavering passion for his interests.
After graduating from high school in Belen, New Mexico, John enlisted in the United States Navy, serving two tours in Vietnam. His military service instilled in him a sense of duty and camaraderie that he carried throughout his life. He was actively involved in veteran affairs, proudly serving as the VFW Commander in both Clovis, New Mexico, and Zwolle, Louisiana.
John's professional life was equally admirable. He retired as a Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad engineer after many years of dedicated service, having worked diligently to climb the ranks within the industry. His commitment to excellence extended beyond his career, as he was never one to shy away from helping others, always willing to lend a hand to those who were less fortunate. His easy going personality and his ability to talk to anyone, always gave people the sense that he never met a stranger.
John cultivated a love for the outdoors, particularly enjoying hunting with his sons in the mountains of the Clovis, New Mexico region. His presence at his sons' activities was unwavering; he was involved in Boy Scouts of America, youth baseball, and even supported the high school band. John's family was central to his life, and after retirement, he cherished his time fishing on Toledo Bend with his sons and grandsons.
A significant aspect of John's life was his extraordinary toy train collection, which was dedicated a huge building to display. Every detail was meticulously considered in this extensive display of his passion for trains, showcasing his creative spirit and his ability to immerse himself in what he loved.
John is survived by his beloved wife, Sheila Custis Riley, and his sons Keith and Kevin Riley. He also leaves behind five cherished grandchildren: Kylan Riley, Kalen Riley, Kasin Riley, Kenon Riley, and Alexandra Riley Salter. He was preceded in death by his parents, Glenn and Ruth Rhodes Riley.
A visitation will take place on Wednesday January 29, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM, followed by a funeral service beginning at 2:00 PM, all at Blanchard-St. Denis Funeral Home in Natchitoches, Louisiana. He will be laid to rest at Weaver Cemetery in Flora, Louisiana with military honors.
The legacy of John Wade Riley, forged through his service, love, and unwavering support for his family and community, will endure in the hearts of those who knew him. His memory will shine brightly through the lives he touched.
